Blow up the shophar in the new moon [chodesh - renewal] [that is, the renewal of the moon - when you see the crescent
of the Moon, it is a renewal of the Month], in the time appointed [fullness {full moon is the 15th of the Hebrew
Month -- this is the 7 day Festival of Passover & 7 day Festival of Tabernacles}], on our solemn festival [in
Hebrew, 'chag']. 4 For this
was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob. 5 This he ordained in Joseph
for a testimony, when he went out through the land of
Egypt: where I heard a language that I understood not.

| The 50 Year
Cycle of Torah Readings In the Land of Israel, into the fourth
Century, the Congregations followed a Tri-ennial or Septennial Cycle of Torah Readings - This was the original Torah
reading cycle. This means that The 5 books of Moses were divided up into sections to be read each week. The Torah was read
and studied over a 3 1/2 year cycle - thus the term: Tri-ennial. The process would then restart and go through another 3 1/2
years. So, 3.5years + 3.5years = 7years - thus the term Septennial for 7 years. If you remember, Israel's Calendar was divided
up into 7 year periods. After 7 of these 7 year periods, equaling 49 years, there was a Jubilee year on the 50th year. In
that Jubilee year, the Torah (The 5 Books of Moses) was divided up into an Annual Cycle. After the Sanhedrin was banned
and exiled out of Israel by the Romans, in the late 300's, the Annual Cycle was promoted to such an extent
that the Tri-ennial / Septennial Cycle fell into disuse. Most of Judaism continues to follow the Annual Cycle and The
Hebrew Roots Movement, in its various stages of development, continues to follow it also.
There are a few versions of the Tri-ennial Cycle of Torah Readings. The Regular Reading Cycle is interrupted by the Festival Readings during the year, so that,
whether you're following The Annual or The Tri-ennial Cycle, all will be following the same Readings for Festivals and Special
Sabbaths. The 50 Year Cycle of Torah Readings 3 1/2 + 3 1/2 = 7years. 7 of these 7 years cycles = 49 years +
1 Year = The 50th Year, the Yovel, or, The Jubilee Year.
Originally, In the Land of Israel, there was a 7 Year Cycle of
Torah Readings, which was repeated for 49 Years, [7 x 7 = 49] and then, there was a Reading for the 50th Year - which, in
English is called, The Jubilee Year - or, the 50th year Reading of the Torah, wherein the 5 Books of Moses were read in 1
year instead of the normal cycle 3 1/2 years. So then, we have 7 years
times 7 years = 49 years. The 50th year is the Jubilee (in Hebrew it is called the Yovel). Tri-ennial means (3.5 years + 3.5 years) equaling a 7 year period of Torah Readings, which means Septennial.
This is repeated for 49 years. This
is also called the Septennial Cycle of Torah Readings 7x7 = 49 years & the 50th Jubilee Year Torah Reading is now called the Annual
Cycle The Weekly Readings from the Law (Torah - Instruction) of God |
Our understanding of the Tri-ennial Cycle readings
came from Rabbi Dr. Yosef ben Haggai of Bet Emunah Torah Institute, whom I studied under for 1 1/2 years. Our use of these
are with his permission.
